You. Don't. Know.

Making the rounds on FB today is the "How I Feel Picking the Next President" image that shows different bags of disgusting-flavored Lays potato chips.

I am simultaneously amused and disturbed by how many friends have shared this image, since it seems to resonate with folks no matter what their political affiliation.

The Democrats aren't happy with their candidates.

Lord knows the Republicans aren't happy with their candidates, either.

Independents get to be doubly disgusted.

The only folks escaping complete disappointment would seem to be the libertarians (both big and little L), who by now are pretty much inured to the idea of seeing the American political process circle faster and faster as it heads down the drain.

We've seen better days, here in America. We're got some problems these days, and some serious disagreement on how to address them. Fortunately, I don't think any of those problems are insurmountable...

... unless we elect leaders that profit from exploiting those disagreements and divisions.

Understand this, though: they can only do that if you let them.

My wife's a registered Republican, and she genuinely cares for the future of our country. It makes me furious when I see Democrat cheerleaders talking about how all Republicans are racist, misogynist, stupid, and vile. (Hint: if you're going to explain to me that you can accuse the Republican party of being all that, but not imply anything about my wife, then you're part of the problem, bucko.)

I've got friends who are Democrats, and they genuinely care for the future of our country. It torques me off to no end when I see Republican cheerleaders talking about how all Democrats are ignorant, deceitful, delusional, and vile. (Hint: see above hint.)

Not to mention the Libertarians, who are disdained by both the Democrats and the Republicans, because we don't know where roads come from, or something. But, hey, news flash - we care about the future of the country, too.

If you're one of those folks that think that Fox News, or the Huffington Post, or the Washington Post, or the New York Times or CNN or Breitbart or Mother Jones or Red State or... whoever is the font of all evil, then man (or lady, or whatever pronoun you prefer).... you are part of the problem.

You're trying to make excuses in your head, now. "But, but, but..." Trust me, I know. I've been there.

DON'T DO THAT.

I know, you're a little scared. The advice is the same.

DON'T DO THAT.

Don't give in to the fear.

Here's the truth: the guy that you know at work, at church, at your social club? The one that you don't agree with on politics at all? That makes you see red every time he talks about how it's all the fault of those racists, those freeloaders, those "other people"?

He's a little scared, too.

You're not all that different, really. You're both worried. You're both concerned. Not just about yourself, but about your fellow citizen as well. You both want the best for each other, really.

You'd both rather, just, you know, get on with life than have to worry about who's going to be Chief Doofus of the Free World next year.

Just... you know, keep that in mind.

This time next year, you'll either be part of The Establishment, or you'll be a part of the Loyal Opposition. Right now, you don't really know which group you'll end up in. Might be one; might be the other.

YOU.  DON'T.  KNOW.

What you DO know is that a year from now, you and your neighbor will still get along, because... well, neighbors. You'll still get together for a beer after you're done mowing the yard, or your kids win (or lose) the local baseball championship.

What you DO know is that a year from now, you and your coworker will still be working together. You'll still feel bad for them when they tell you about their latest problems and worries. You'll still get together and curse about the devil-spawned end-user, and how you wish people would just think before they did something, right?

What you DO know is that a year from now, you'll still be in church with that fellow who had some ideas about how the country should be run that seemed odd to you. He'll still come to you and ask you to pray for his brother, because cancer sucks. And you'll say yeah, and when you get home, you'll break down and cry, because your mom fought that black beast and lost, and who the hell cares what his politics are when he's going through that particular patch of misery.

All of which is to say: your brother is not your enemy, dude.

Your sister is not your enemy, girl.

We are all in this together, we are all searching for solutions together, and if you hear anybody - anybody, on any side - telling you that your brother or sister doesn't deserve to be listened to because THEY ARE THE PROBLEM...

... then you should back away slowly, and understand where the REAL problem is.

That's a negative, Mogul

BAIER: Mr. Trump, just yesterday, almost 100 foreign policy experts signed on to an open letter refusing to support you, saying your embracing expansive use of torture is inexcusable. General Michael Hayden, former CIA director, NSA director, and other experts have said that when you asked the U.S. military to carry out some of your campaign promises, specifically targeting terrorists’ families, and also the use of interrogation methods more extreme than waterboarding, the military will refuse because they’ve been trained to turn down and refuse illegal orders.
So what would you do, as commander-in-chief, if the U.S. military refused to carry out those orders?
TRUMP: They won’t refuse. They’re not going to refuse me. Believe me.
BAIER: But they’re illegal.
I used to be in the Navy.  I can, should I desire to do so, quite literally swear like a sailor.  I endeavor to avoid strong language, though.  Partly because a civilized man should be able to express strong emotion without the use of vulgarity; but primarily because, as I a preacher of the Word of God, I feel that my using such language casually reflects poorly on me, my testimony, and my savior.

So feel free to add any additional adjectives you feel might be needed to properly emphasize the statement that follows:
If this... person... somehow manages to end up in the White House; and if he does, indeed, give our military orders to kill non-combatant women and children; then I pray to God Almighty that the mean and women of the US armed forces, from the highest of the high to the lowest of the low, will have both the extensive vocabulary and will to employ it that they will be able to tell him just how thoroughly and completely they will be ignoring those orders.
If they do not?  I will take it as an indication that it is time to do some gardening.
Oh, and you Trump supporters?  Do not even try to tell me that I'm misunderstanding.  Go read the transcript for yourself.  He is pretty stinking clear on his point.  If you believe the garbage he is spewing, then you're supporting a candidate who has publicly stated that if he is elected, he will be willing to use our military to murder women and children.

Does that sound familiar?  Because it should.

Honestly, the only way out from under this particular statement is for you to claim that he didn't really mean what he said.  Well, then, genius, tell me: what else has he said that he doesn't really mean?  Is it not just possible, but likely, that whenever his food hole is making noise, he is lying to you?

Come on, tell me.  Which Trump are you voting for: the murderous lunatic, or the pathological liar?

Trump.  Don't Just Say No - Say [insert adjective of your choice] No!

__LOCATION__, __LOCATION__, __LOCATION__

I'm working with an open source project right now that uses a __location__ macro to identify source files and lines for debugging.

If you happen to not be familiar with this concept... the __location__ macro is a #define, designed to take the standard c pre-processor macros for __FILE__ (the name of the current source file) and __LINE__ (the line in the current source file) and use some c language macro trickery to turn it into a single string that consists of the file name (foobar.c) and the file line (255) jammed together (ex, "foobar.c:255").

This was apparently done to simplify logging.  You want to know where something went wrong? Well, then - just log the __location__ of your output, and now you know!  Wonderful! Why futz around with two macros (__FILE__ and __LINE__) when you can just use __location__ instead?

Except... each and every use of __location__ now creates a unique string.

And the compiler, when it goes to optimize read-only data, can no longer consolidate all those references to __FILE__ into a single string in rodata.  Because you have helpfully replaced all (or almost all) of those references to __FILE__ with a reference to __location__, and now instead of on instance of the string "foobar.c" in your binary, you have strings for:
foobar.c:32
foobar.c:97
foobar.c:135
foobar.c:176
foobar.c:193
foobar.c:255
... and so on, and so on.  One string for each __location__.

Quick calculation shows that, for this project, 10% of the size of the stripped binaries - over 15 megabytes of data - consists of these debugging strings.

Ouch.

My current pet project is to work on replacing the use of __location__ with the explicit use of the standard __FILE__ and __LINE__ macros, and (hopefully!) reclaim that space.

Senseless Waste

Region-locked printing ink.  Seriously.
So, it appears that if you attempt to forcefeed a Xerox printer not-from-around-here ink, it will potentially brick the device. At that point, you're forced to ask for a Xerox rep to drop by and unlock your purchased printer for you...
Sure, it's only 10 minutes of work, but it's $60 being shelled out by a paying customer just so his printer will go back to printing. The only thing actually "broken" is Xerox's business model.
It's ink, for the love of heaven!  INK!

The whole idea of intentionally breaking something that is functional makes me twitch.

Whatever idiot at Xerox came up with this particular idea should be manhandled into the nearest convenient alleyway and beaten with garbage can lids until whatever is broken in their brain starts working again.

QOTD

From Larry Correia on Facebook, on the differences between Republicans and Democrats:
I love how the day after the election the Libertarian Unicorn Calvary rides in to explain how the two parties are EXACTLY THE SAME and NOTHING HAS CHANGED.
Yeah, I can totally see your point, except for the Republicans being better on economics, business, foreign policy, taxes, entitlements, welfare (both individual and corporate), national defense, healthcare, guns, framing any policy disagreement as racism, reading your mail, tapping your phones, using the IRS to attack opponents, running illegal guns to Mexico to frame American gun owners, and basic !@#$%^& math, they're totally the same. Yes, you want an ice cream cone RIGHT NOW and the republicans didn't give it to you, so they're totally the same.
Yes, the republicans suck. But they are a far more manageable form of suck.
Go, RTWT.

Community? NOT.

Good.

There was one line in the story that kind of torqued me off, though.
Jessica Abels, who lives near the spot on Cronk Avenue near Illinois Avenue where the woman was found walking bloodied and naked, said she looked out the window when she heard a woman screaming for help around 2 p.m. Sept. 26.
She saw the woman jump out the window of a nearby vacant home, she said.
"Her eyes were all swollen and she had blood all over her and in her mouth," Abels said. "She was pretty messed up."
That's when the community jumped into action.
Several area residents offered the 21-year-old woman clothing and comfort while a man who holds a valid concealed pistols license ordered the suspect out of the house at gunpoint, according to Flint police.
Emphasis mine.

Now, gather 'round and listen closely, ye who would claim to be reporters.  I know that you have almost certainly been taught that "social justice" and "journalism" are effectively synonyms. However, now that you are actually out in the real world, and doing real reporting, please do us all a favor, put that attitude away on the shelf next to your diploma, and keep that SJW nonsense out of the freaking facts of the matter, will you?

The "community", whatever the heck you think that is, did not "jump into action".

Individual people saw what was happening.  Each individual then made a personal decision to step up and do something.

I am pretty sure that things happened quickly enough in this case that the "community" was not involved at any point.

I sincerely doubt that a "community" meeting was called in order to reach consensus and collectively decide the proper course of action vis-a-vis this situation.

I will admit that I cannot be absolutely positive this was the case.  However, I do believe the circumstantial evidence is on my side.

Note the complete lack of a hashtag campaign, for example.  The absence of a slipshod protest against the dirty Koch Brothers and the notable absence of any "organizers" on the scene is a pretty good indication that the "community" was not involved.

Finally and most importantly, there is the simple fact that something was actually accomplished, which in my experience is a near-certain indication that the wonderfully ambiguous and amorphous "community" was not involved in any way, shape, or form.

"Community", my shiny metal... er.

Sorry.  Channeled a bit to much of my  inner Tam there.

Nice Charity You Have There...

Despite the fact that Open Source Software foundations have existed for years, the IRS has apparently just decided that they are not allowed to be non-profits.
In a disturbing precedent, the Yorba Foundation, which makes apps for GNU/Linux, has had its nonprofit status application rejected by the IRS because some of projects may benefit for-profit entities.
Here's the thing: I do not think that this has anything to do with OSS, specifically.  I think that OSS just happens to be a nice starting point for the IRS to test out a nice, new, shiny +5 Phrase of Vaugeness against a soft target that has little or no capability of fighting back.
"May benefit for-profit entities."
Think about it.  There is a lot - an awful lot - of potential tax money there for the taking, after all. They just need to come up with a way to justify it, and get a few examples on the books to establish a precedent.  With this phrase, they do not even need to show that a non-profit is actually doing anything in particular.  Just suggesting that they might do an unquantifiable something for an unidentified someone at an undisclosed sometime is enough to yank their 501(c)(3) status.

Anyone want to lay odds that some of those annoyingly conservative non-profits are going to be hearing this phrase in the near future?

Amused

Earlier today, Michael Z. Williamson put up a Facebopok post, looking for someone "... well versed in Christian theology..." to help with some story research.

Apparently, he's got quite a few readers - and FB followers - who are preachers, teachers, or what-have-you across a number of different denominations.  More than a few mentioned time in seminary or spent pursuing a theology degree.  We all chimed in and offered whatever assistance he might need.

Imagine that.  All us religious folks reading Mad Mike.  Which obviously goes to prove how stupid we are.  Because there is no other explanation for why such unbelievably homophobic, racist, sexist, classist, extremist, bitter clingers would read fiction from a such a libertarian author, right?

Because everyone knows that we're just plain ignorant and intolerant.

Meanwhile, ask your favorite progressive if they've ever read anything from Mr. Williamson, or Larry Correia, or Sarah Hoyt.  Be prepared for a lecture on why they would never sully their eyes with their right-wing filth.

What was that phrase again?  Ah, yes... "just plain ignorant and intolerant."

Watermelons

John Stossel on the cargo-cult environmental holiday of Earth Day:
It's possible climate change may become a problem. But even if industrialization brings warming, we've got more important problems. On my TV show this week, statistician Bjorn Lomborg points out that "air pollution kills 4.3 million people each year ... We need to get a sense of priority." That deadly air pollution happens because, to keep warm, poor people burn dung in their huts.
Yet, time and again, environmentalists oppose the energy production most likely to make the world cleaner and safer. Instead, they persuade politicians to spend billions of your dollars on symbolism like "renewable" energy.
Do environmentalists even care about measuring costs instead of just assuming benefits?
Well, no.  No they don't.  If they really did care about the environment, they would be supporting the development of nuclear power, instead of slaughtering birds with wind turbines.  If they really did care about global warming, they would be supporting natural gas development in the US instead of opposing it.  If they really did care about people dying of easily avoidable malnutrition, they would be supporting the development of golden rice instead of opposing it.

Instead of doing anything to actually solve these problems, what do they do?  Designate a holy day to spend worshiping mother Gaia.  Drive a coal-powered electric car to show how much they care. Carefully separate paper and plastics into the proper recycling bins as an act of penance.  Nothing they do, say or support has any practical, real-world application to solving a problem.  Their actions are no more than a salve to soothe whatever tattered remnants of conscience still inhabits their shriveled, blackened souls.

They are not visionaries.  They are your so-called betters, who ache for approval and yearn for authority over others more than anything else.

They are racists, bigots, and nihilists who long for death.

Epic Movie Rant Is Epic

John C. Wright is not impressed with the second movie in "The Hobbit" trilogy.
I loved the first Hobbit movie and hated, hated, hated the second. It was stupid on every level of stupidity. It is rightly to be called THE DESOLATION OF TOLKIEN.
While I enjoyed "Desolation", I really have to agree with him.  The number or divergences from the actual, you know, story of "The Hobbit" were hardly subtle.  There is a reason that the lovely Mrs. Robb refers to "The Hobbit" as "That Middle-Earth Movie".

Here is a taste to whet your appetite for the whole thing:
Just when I picked myself again off the sticky floor of the theater, blearily wondering where the Hobbit character was after whom this movie was apparently named might be, BAM! The familiar Hammer came down again. This time, it was a scene where Orlando Bloom is standing a zillion feet away from the evil orc bounty hunter Slopgog the Unmentionable or whatever his name is, and he does not shoot him with an elf arrow.
I sat there, rocking back and forth with my eyes crossed, and through the stream of drool and vitreous humor leaking down my chin I muttered again and again, “Shoot him with an elf arrow. Shoot. Him. With. An. Elf. Arrow. SHOOT HIM WITH AN ELF ARROW!
But no. No elf arrow was forthcoming.
I have no doubt that "Shoot him with an elf arrow!" will quickly become a family idiom.

Tempest in a Coke Bottle

Apparently, this is a thing:

Personally, I think this commercial is made of pure, unadulterated awesome.

Years ago, Coke wanted to teach the world to sing.  Now we see that the song they want to teach the world to sing is... America the Beautiful.  People from different cultures, different backgrounds, different races, different countries all singing together:

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountains' majesty
Above the fruited plain!

America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

Seriously - what is there not to love about that?  I happen to think that America is made of win.  That we are a uniquely different and uniquely special nation that has changed the world for the better.  The thought of people who have come to this country from around the world recognizing that and singing about how wonderful America is sends shivers up and down my spine.

It gives me hope for our nation.  Not the hopey-changey kind, but real, honest-to-God hope.

Which is why I thought it was odd that there was a "conservative backlash" against this ad. Although the existence of the "backlash" seems to be... somewhat questionable.  As Matt Walsh points out:
So imagine my surprise when I went on the internet after the game to see social media abuzz over the “right wing backlash against Coca-Cola.”
Funny thing: these stories started popping up within minutes of the ad airing.
Meanwhile, I’m on Twitter as much as the next guy, and I didn’t see anyone complain about the ad. I’m connected with 120 thousand folks on Facebook, and none of them seemed too concerned. I checked the #SpeakAmerican and #BoycottCoke hashtags, and I saw nothing but a bunch of people defending the ad and lambasting the “racists” who were “offended” by it.
Most of the stories about the phantom “firestorm” cite comments from Alan West and Fox News’ Todd Starnes. As far as notable public figures go, that’s it. Two guys.
Two guys can constitute a STORM OF FIERCE OUTRAGE, apparently.
Emphasis mine.  Go, RTWT.  Matt's got the gift of snark, and deploys it liberally.

The whole situation reminds me of this XKCD comic:

In this case, instead of the citogenesis process, call it the orgegenesis process.

  • A group decides how some other group will react to a piece of media.
  • Anticipating that reaction, the group takes to the internet to express their outrage at... nothing.
  • Others assume that if the outrage exists, then so must the stated cause of the outrage.
  • They take to the internet to write about this outrage du jour, and the cycle is complete.

Kind of a two-minutes hate write large.

Far be it from me to suggest that certain individuals may have had everything ready to kickstart this current orgegenesis cycle.  I am sure that dozens of similar articles about conservative outrage over the Coke commercial that appeared almost immediately on liberal sites were nothing more than an strange coincidence. After all, it's not like they have ever before coordinated their efforts to smear conservatives.  Right?

Anyways.  Coke ad.  Awesome.

Go ahead and teach the world to sing, Coke, with my blessings.

Remind them that America is beautiful.

We could all use a little real hope right now.

50k and Counting

Last year, more than 30,000 winter deaths were thought to be caused by fuel poverty, up by a third from the previous year, according to the Office for National Statistics. - http://www.eenews.net/stories/1059992359
Across Europe, low income residents are being sacrificed to the Green Gods of Faux Environmentalism. Increasing numbers die in winter, unable to heat their cold dark homes — while fat green government and EU officials and cronies pat each other on the back in congratulations for pushing the penetration of the intermittent unreliables big wind/solar to more and more destructive heights.
Twenty-two thousand in 2012. Thirty thousand in 2013.

Still, you know - you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs.  Amirite?  Besides, these were poor people.  They probably lived miserable lives and had sub-standard health insurance and stuff.  It's not like they had anything to contribute to society, after all.  Just dead wood, really.

If you haven't noticed it already, environmentalists hate poor people.  After all, it's not like they matter... in non-election years, anyways.

Besides, when you get right down to it, fifty thousand dead peons is just a rounding error in the ongoing environmentalist death toll.

The Inmates Are Running the Asylum

The Army has been researching a more environment-friendly bullet at the Picatinny Arsenal, in New Jersey, since 2010. A lead-free version of the 7.62-mm rounds fired from M-14 rifles will be issued to troops in 2014. That will follow a prior switch to a greener 5.56 mm "Enhanced Performance Round" the Army switched to in 2010.
“The EPR replaces the lead slug with a copper slug,” Lt. Col. Phil Clark, product manager for small-caliber ammunition at Picatinny, told the Daily Caller. “This makes the projectile environmentally friendly, while still giving soldiers the performance capabilities they need on the battlefield.”
Last I checked, waging war also included the use of things like grenades. Claymores. Hellfire missiles. TOWs. Tanks. Bunker-buster bombs. Tomahawks. Drones. Napalm B. Naval gunfire support.

None of which are really known for being "environmentally friendly".

By the patron saint's name of Frick... do these idiots not understand what the word "battlefield" means?

Rage

A Texas teenager killed four people while driving drunk in June. Prosecutors pushed for a 20-year sentence, but a judge sentenced the teen to 10 years probation and no jail time.
He must have had a real sob-story to get that much sympathy, right?
A psychologist testified for the defense that the teen was a product of something he called "affluenza." He meant Couch doesn't link bad behavior with consequences because his parents taught him that wealth buys privilege.
... privileges like, say, getting a slap on the wrist for stealing beer, driving drunk, and killing four people?

Yeah, thanks, judge Judy or whoever you are.  You're really showing him that actions have consequences!  Man, once he gets out of that $500K California rehab vacation visit his folks are springing for, I am totes sure he will have finally learned his lesson!

Well, a lesson, at least.  Probably the exact opposite of the lesson that he needs to learn, but, eh.  It's not like he killed anyone!

Anyone important, I mean.

Rope.

Pass That Torch, Will Ya?

Via The Crank:
The government is clumsy, incompetent, greedy, corrupt, and prone to suddenly decide that behavior that has always been legal is now criminal. Not our government now; all governments, ever. For these reasons it is nearly always in the citizens’ interest to keep the State blind, deaf, and crippled.
Harsh?  Consider...
That's just from today.

I won't even include the latest news reports on the ongoing IRS scandals, the Benghazi hearings, the Obamacare debacle, and the latest and greatest "Oops, yeah, we totally forgot to mention we were also violating those other laws, our bad" NSA Revelation of the Day ™.

Blind, deaf, and crippled.  I like the sound of that.

Sanity

TORONTO - Greenpeace is committing “crimes against humanity” by attempting to block the distribution of genetically-modified Golden Rice which could prevent the deaths of millions of children, said a founder of the environmental organization.
“I left Greenpeace in 1986 when they abandoned logical science,” Moore said at a downtown Toronto protest outside Greenpeace’s headquarters. “Greenpeace is back in the dark ages (opposing modified food). They are targeting Golden Rice even though it targets a human need.”
As I have said before, this is a hot button topic for me.

Seeing Mr. Moore and others with his background in environmentalism confronting the irrationality of the modern environmental movement is a cause for hope.

The American Mushroom

I came across the following comment on a FB post discussion of Obamacare earlier today...
I would be more sympathetic to the opponents if they were actually proposing something instead of having a massive temper tantrum.
Really.

Really.

Keep in mind that this was a comment from a fairly intelligent, relatively well-informed and politically knowledgeable individual.  They knew, for a fact, that the Republicans had no alternative to the ACA...

... and yet, all it took me was a few seconds with Google to turn up mention five or more significant Republican health care reform proposals from the past four years.

Now, given who my typical readers are, I am going to bet that most of you have heard of one or two of these proposals.  Maybe even all of them.  In fact, there are probably additional proposals and bills that are out there that I wasn't able to uncover.  I recall reading at one point that there were literally dozens of alternative health care reform bills proposed and killed in the house during the months leading up to the ACA.

Notice where these articles are from, though.  PolicyMic. Town Hall. CNS News.  Kaiser Health News.  Only the last is from a traditional newspaper, the Washington Times.

Repeat after me, folks.  The media is not your friend.  There is a reason that you do not know anything about these alternatives to the ACA, and that is because the mainstream media refuses to mention them, refuses to talk about them, refuses to write about them.

Republican health care reform?  They have made it into a non-thought.  It doesn't exist, because if it did exist, they would report on it!  But they're not reporting on it, so, therefore, it must not exist!  Right?

Riiiight.

They do the same thing with Libertarian candidates.  Minority conservatives.  Kermit Gosnell.  Defensive gun use.  Increases in arctic ice and decreases in hurricanes.  Anything else that doesn't fit their narrative.

In the eyes of today's mainstream media, we are all mushrooms.  Kept in the dark, and fed a steady diet of... well, you know, the smelly, nasty, disgusting garbage that the MSM spews out.

"News."

Hey, whaddya know!  It's even a four-letter word.

"By George, I think she's got it!"

Facebook commentary on this article over at The Smallest Minority:
The Lovely Mrs. Robb: Rope. For every last one of them.
Old Mutual Friend: Tar and Feathers first
The Lovely Mrs. Robb: Light the tar on fire first.
I think I can get behind that.  Especially as it is supposed to be a particularly cold winter.  And you know who's hardest hit by something like that, don't you?  The young and the elderly, of course.

Tar, feathers, and a match.  It's for the children.

Excuse Me?

Declaring himself "war-weary" but determined to hold Syria accountable for using banned chemical weapons, President Barack Obama said Friday he was considering a limited response to what U.S. intelligence assessed with "high confidence" as a Syrian attack that killed more than 1,400 people...
"Now, I have not made a final decision about various actions that might be taken to help enforce that norm. But as I've already said, I have had my military and our team look at a wide range of options."
My military?  MY military?

Excuse me, sir... but you didn't build that.

That is our military you are talking about.

In case you have forgotten, they work for us.  We have graciously allowed you command of our armed forces... for a time.  You are not a king; you are not an emperor; you are not a dictator.

You are an employee.

A senior employee, true... but you are not irreplaceable, no matter what you may happen to think.
